What Sybil Estess says of her own work...if you are interested in her view of the kind of poet she is, or perhaps wondering whether you might like to work with her on your own poems... Since I am in my sixties now, I burn to write to write while time lasts. I began writing diaries, prayers, as a child. Today, my poems are like prayers. My poetry is personal, but not confessional. It is usually derived from either real or imaginary experiences from my life or the lives of others whom I know. Often experiences from the natural world, such as a simple afternoon walk near my home, a trip to the beach, a family vacation, or even just scenes that I witness lead to epiphanies or discoveries within my psyche. They may eventuate in a poem. My poems are usually crafted, over and over, for sound, rhythm, meter or form. Often an original first person experience is transformed into third person...in order to make the poem more universal: something that could happen to anyone or be derived from almost any human experience. Relationships play a large role in the subjects about which I write. The role of mother, friend, wife, lover, or relative, for example, could be the subject matter of a poem for me. Also, my poetry often concerns travels and the discoveries one can experience in non-familiar locations. Most of my poems are short and lyrical, but frequently contain a narrative dimension. Many of my poems are based on myths - Biblical or multi-cultural. I was reared in a strictly Christian environment, and the stories from the Hebrew and Christian Bibles become metaphors and archetypes in a considerable number of my poems. Sybil Pittman Estess |
